When patients have a diagnosis of conditions including periodontal disease, it is essential that they work with our team to obtain the treatment they need to keep the smile healthier, longer.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that develops within the smile. It might also refer to gum disease, but it can harm much more than just the soft tissues. Periodontal disease can wreak havoc on the smile, destroying:

  • Gums
  • Teeth
  • Bone

The condition is entirely preventable with proper care and maintenance of the smile, including routine dental visits every six months for cleanings and examinations. When periodontal disease is caught early, interventional treatment works best and can help patients in keeping their smile healthy over time.

What are the stages of periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease can be evaluated and spotted during a physical evaluation with Dr. Rawat. Diagnosis can occur at any stage. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is often known as gingivitis. This condition is characterized by bleeding, red, and swollen gums. At this point, patients who seek treatment can often reverse the situation and bring their oral health back to its original state. However, if patients avoid treatment and allow the condition to progress, it can become much more damaging. Periodontal disease in the later stages is referred to as periodontitis. This condition can cause the loss of bone, shrinking gum tissues, and even loose or lost teeth due to the destroyed foundation. Patients who have experienced the later stages of periodontitis will need to work with a dentist to not only control the condition and get the smile back to health but to restore the smile after bone and tooth loss. This may include repairing the jaw with bone grafting and using tooth replacement solutions including dentures, dental bridges, or dental implants. Restoration can only be performed once the condition has stabilized with appropriate care. Controlling the later stages of periodontitis can be done with scaling and root planing, a procedure that cleans all the visible and non-visible surfaces of the teeth, including the roots. It might be combined with other treatments such as antibiotics applied directly within the smile or administered via oral medication to treat from the inside out.
